The model 48 was actually introduced in 1943 and discontinued in 1954. it was produced in limited numbers during wwII. It is a pre-1968 gun because the Gun Control Act of 1968 required serial numbers thereafter. The model 48 Topper was made from 1943 to 1956.

The barrel has a snap on fore end (1971?) The receiver has no visible serial number. Were there receivers without serial numbers after 1940? Or The letters before the serial numbers are a prefix. It is part of the serial number. They would start with 00001 and then work up to 99999.

An oldie but goodie. 12 gauge single shot. Serial number begins with "I," which puts this in the 1948 manufacture date range.
